What TMS Treatment Is

What TMS Treatment Is

TMS stands for transcranial magnetic stimulation and is a noninvasive procedure that stimulates nerve cells in the brain via magnetic fields produced by a machine. This form of stimulation to the brain relieves depression symptoms and has shown to greatly affect the mood and temperament of those undergoing treatment. The exact reasoning behind the improvement in mood is not entirely understood, but the results are clear. When repetitive magnetic pulses are delivered, the brain responds by activating regions of the brain that have decreased activity in depression. TMS is used after traditional antidepressants have failed and is then covered by insurances to ensure relief from depression. other forms of therapy and depression treatments have been exhausted and shown not to improve symptoms.

Is it safe?

Yes! TMS is a safe treatment that is well-tolerated and rarely presents unwanted side effects. Because TMS is noninvasive, there are no surgical steps involved that carry a lengthy recovery. Instead, you can expect to return to normal activities after your session of treatment. Side effects are uncommon, but when they occur they typically only consist of mild scalp tenderness at the treatment site or mild headache which improves within a few hours. TMS has been approved by the FDA and has been a studied practice since 1985 (should be at the end of the 1st paragraph).

How does it work?

A small electromagnetic coil is placed against the left side of the head delivers strong, quick bursts of magnetic pulses. TMS uses the same magnetic fields as MRI machines and the magnetic strength is comparable to the ones used during medical imaging. Targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, short pulses stimulate the part of the brain that regulates mood and has been found to be underactive in depression. This form of stimulation is thought to assist in releasing neurotransmitters that greatly improve symptoms of depression.

What to expect on treatment days?

On your first day of treatment, your Psychiatrist will be there to guide you through each step of the process.. Your first appointment will likely last 40 minutes and will consist of a mapping and motor threshold determination, or figuring out the appropriate treatment location and power setting needed to maximize treatment. You will sit comfortably in a chair with the magnetic coil placed against your head during the treatment, which lasts for either the FDA approved times of about 3 minutes or 20 minutes depending on the protocol chosen. After treatment you are able to leave the clinic and return to home, go to work, or even to the gym!

Conclusion

TMS is an FDA approved treatment modality for Treatment Resistant Depression and has been found to be more effective than traditional medications. It is safe, effective, and transformative for those struggling with depression and it’s usually covered by insurance!
