Dual Diagnosis · St. George & Cedar City

When mental health and substance use overlap, both need care.

Struggling with your mental health and with substances at the same time isn't a failure of willpower; it's incredibly common, and the two feed each other. Treating them together, not separately, is what makes lasting recovery possible.

Understanding Dual Diagnosis

What dual diagnosis means.

Dual diagnosis, also called co-occurring disorders, describes having a mental health condition, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder, alongside a substance use condition. Very often one drives the other: people may use substances to quiet difficult symptoms, and substance use then deepens those symptoms.

Because the two are intertwined, treating only one tends to leave the other to pull recovery back. Our integrated approach addresses both at the same time, combining psychiatric care, therapy, and structured support, with compassion and without judgment.

Do You Recognize This?

Signs of a co-occurring condition.

If several of these fit, integrated care can help.

  • Using alcohol or other substances to cope with mood or anxiety.
  • Mental health symptoms that worsen when you use, or when you stop.
  • Trying to cut back but finding it hard to stop.
  • Treatment for one issue that never fully sticks.
  • Feeling caught in a cycle you can't break alone.

Frequently Asked

Questions people ask.

What is dual diagnosis?

Dual diagnosis, or co-occurring disorders, means having a mental health condition and a substance use condition at the same time. They often influence each other.

Why treat both at the same time?

Because they're connected. Treating only one usually leaves the other to undermine recovery. Integrated care addresses both together for lasting results.

Will I be judged for substance use?

No. Our approach is compassionate and non-judgmental. Substance use is understood as part of a medical and psychological picture, not a moral failing.

What does treatment involve?

A coordinated plan that may include psychiatric medication, therapy, and structured support such as an intensive outpatient program, all tailored to you.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can contact us directly for an evaluation in St. George, Cedar City, or by telehealth across Utah.

Recovery is possible when both are treated.

Reach out for a confidential, judgment-free consultation. We'll build a plan that addresses everything at once. No referral required.
